In March 2017, my partner and I set off on a four month journey across the United States. We had both lived internationally and also visited plenty of places, but I had always yearned to do what I considered traveling; embarking with no plan, no time limit, the intent to cover a vast geographic swathe of land, and a reasonable sum of money. I found it ironic, but fitting, that the first place I was able to finally do this was my own country. These non-fiction short stories are profiles of the people and places we met along the way. This trip was a healthy reminder that you need not look very far past your own front door to build the empathy, understanding, and worldliness that so many of us seek when we travel.
